Catholics believe the Eucharist, or Holy Communion, is both a sacrifice and a meal. We believe the Eucharist is the real presence of Jesus, who died for our sins. As we receive Christ’s Body and Blood, we are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God. The Eucharist is a sacrament that Catholics are encouraged to partake in regularly. The Eucharist is offered at Mass to children who have made their first holy communion and adults who are practicing Catholics. Children who are preparing to receive the Eucharist for the first time are required to be in 2nd grade and have one year of Catholic religious education prior to entering 2nd grade.
